Have you heard that a duct-taped banana sold for $120,000 at Art Basel in Miami?
Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan created a duct-taped banana “art work” that is on display at Art Basel in Miami. The original banana sold for the amazing price of $120,000. Then, a second edition of “The Banana” sold to a man at an annual art festival. The price was then raised to $150,000 before the third edition was sold to a museum.
Do you find this amusing or ludicrous? It depends upon your taste. This got me thinking that art is not the only medium in which taste varies. The millions of readers who browse book listings every day focus on their favorite category. Though there is cross-over, horror novels may not appeal to historical romance readers. Science fiction may not appeal to all chick-lit readers.
This is true for writers also. It is rare to find a writer who produces categories as diverse as those listed above. Just like her readers, a writer is usually drawn to write in connected categories instead of ones as hugely diverse as horror and sweet romance (though I’m sure it’s been done).
This leads me to ask your opinion. Which type of novel draws your interest the most? Are you drawn to mainstream or fringe categories? The poll below is a fun way to compare our favorite genres. Go ahead and give your answers and I’ll send you a freebie from a category that you like best.
